In a world that is in constant opposition to the Word and blatantly rejecting Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I will make sure that my children know God, Truth and are equipped to live and finish well for His glory alone just as He intended. Of course there are many ways that we can do this like scripture reading, memory, going to church and even through the way we that we live.
In this blog, I will be sharing some of the books that my boys and I love that we use to instill eternal virtues, values and establish a firm foundation of faith. I believe that everything begins at home, not at church or any other outside location. At home, we are responsible for training our children up in the ways that they should go according to Proverbs 22:6.

One way that I have found to be an easy way to do this practically is through reading. At my children’s ages of two and five at the time of this writing, reading is still fun, entertaining and a desire. During our readings, we get a chance to connect on various levels, discuss, and process through different concepts. In this blog, I will be sharing a few of our favorite books that we are currently loving and have found helpful to teach my boys about God, their identity, character development and more!
Tiny Truths Bible
Tiny Truths really did this bible for our children so well! While we have several bibles floating around here, this was one of the first and favorite children’s bibles that I bought for my boys. I love that they have two variations of it to fit the needs and realistic developmental stage of our children. We have this one and this one. One of the things that I love most is the imagery is more accurate than most children’s bibles. I believe that true and accurate representation is a huge part of the history and lineage of Jesus and it should be depicted accurately.
You Are Special
This book is so special to us with a foundation of eternal truth. In this story, our children learn and are encouraged to remember that we/they are special to God just the way we are. It emphasizes the truth of the value words hold and who’s should hold the most weight in our lives.
Listening For God: Silence Practice for Little Ones
A household favorite indeed! In full transparency, I love when the boys ask to read this one because it reminds me and gives me an opportunity to practice intentional meditation as well. The author does a beautiful job teaching the valuable lesson that God wants to speak to you/me/us and how we can prioritize this relationship with Him through silence, patience and meditation. Through the story of the Prophet Elijah, we are able to see this on display which presents children with an opportunity to grow in this spiritual discipline of listening for the voice of God. We know this is vital to the life of a Christian even as a child.
Bible 1: Truths for Life
As a homeschooling mama, I wanted to be sure that sound theology and foundations of our faith were incorporated into our daily lessons. BJU has done a great job creating such resources that I am looking forward to using as the boys grow older and deepen their faith. It is very easy to follow for both myself and my oldest son. My little one is even picking up a few things! The teacher manual is super helpful for guiding each day of conversation and instruction.
The Berenstain Bears Book Collection
My boys LOVE these books and ask to read them daily. When I found out that the Berenstain Bears collection of books was revamped to include values, virtues, eternal truths and character building topics for children, I was blown away! We have a library full and I plan to collect even more. This collection of books is a great starting place for all children to learn more about and instill good values, character development and more. I highly recommend these for any and all age ranges!
The Berenstain Bears Bedtime Devotional
Piggy backing off of our love for the Zonderkids revamp of the Berenstain Bears book collections, we of course had to add this short and sweet bedtime devotional to our night time routine. Each page is short, direct and even includes a scripture and guided prayer that we add to our prayer each night.
This list is not exhaustive by any means, but I do believe reading books is a great tool to use and help us disciple our children in a small, practical way. Here, you can find more of our favorite tiny disciple making books that we love in our library that you should definitely add to yours. Either way, keep up the great work mama! Your children will rise up and surely call you blessed.
